Leading Across Cultures: The 21st Century Challenge with Mike Thompson, MBA, U.S. Director, Talent & OD at Grifols (HQ in Spain)

Location: Room B101/103 @ Alliant International University in Alhambra (East of DTLA)

Date: Wednesday, October 21, 2015, 6:00pm - 9:00pm (6:30 p.m. - refreshments served, 6:55 p.m. - presentation & discussions)

What does it mean to be a strong leader? Are characteristics of effective leadership universal across global cultures?  How does a leader effectively manage a culturally dispersed team? What do OD professionals need to know?

Striving to be an effective leader can be a challenge in any organization.  Layer on top of that the added pressure of leading across national cultures, and you have the 21st century leadership challenge.  As organizations continue to expand their geographic boundaries, finding globally competent leaders is becoming an increasing necessity and, in the future, will become a source of competitive advantage.  At the October OD meeting Mike Thompson will discuss these issues, sharing personal experiences working for global corporations, citing research on the topic, and engaging participants in lively discussion.

During this meeting, participants will:

  • Explore the importance of leadership in organizations, both within and outside the U.S.
  • Discuss what it means to be a strong leader within different national cultures.
  • Examine a cultural framework for categorizing leadership styles.

Mike Thompson serves as U.S. Director, Talent & Organizational Development at Grifols, a global pharmaceuticals/bioscience company headquartered in Spain. He has over 30 years of experience in the fields of learning & development, leadership development, organizational development, and management consulting. He has worked in both external and internal roles with major American and Japanese corporations, including State Farm Insurance Companies, Kaiser Permanente, The Cheesecake Factory, PepsiCo, Kraft Foods, Avon, Pratt & Whitney, Toyota, Panasonic, Komatsu, Daiichi Seimei Life Insurance, and Kaneka Chemical Corp.

Outside of his corporate career, Mike has held adjunct teaching positions at the University of Virginia, the University of California, Berkeley, California Lutheran University, and California State University, Channel Islands.

Mike earned his bachelor's degree in Psychology from Tulane University, and his MBA degree from the University of Virginia.
